How to Track Clinical Supervision Hours in Ireland

Master supervision logging for IAHIP, IACP, APCP, and ICP compliance

Clinical supervision is not just good practice—it's a mandatory CPD requirement for most Irish psychotherapists. Here's how to track it properly.

Why Supervision Tracking Matters

Supervision hours are among the most scrutinized during accreditation audits. Poor documentation is the #1 reason psychotherapists fail reaccreditation reviews.

IACP: Compulsory 10 Hours (Category A)

For accredited IACP members, supervision is COMPULSORY. You must complete a minimum of 10 hours per year in Category A (Supervision Received). This is non-negotiable—without it, you cannot renew your accreditation.

IACP Requirements:

  • 10 hours minimum supervision per year (accredited members)
  • Must be with IACP-accredited supervisor
  • Individual or group supervision both count
  • Log date, supervisor name, and hours for each session

IAHIP: Category F (Supervision Received)

While not compulsory like IACP, most IAHIP members log 20-40 hours of supervision per year in Category F. This demonstrates ongoing professional commitment.

APCP & ICP: Core CPD Category

Both APCP (Category C) and ICP (Category B) recognize clinical supervision as a core CPD activity. While specific hour requirements vary by training pathway, regular supervision is expected for all practicing members.

Best Practices for Supervision Logging

1. Log Immediately After Each Session

Don't wait until the end of the year. Log each supervision session within 24 hours while details are fresh.

2. Include Essential Details

  • Date of supervision
  • Supervisor's full name and accreditation number
  • Duration (in hours, e.g., 1.5h)
  • Type (individual or group)
  • Brief note on focus areas (optional but helpful)

3. Get Supervisor Verification

Ask your supervisor to sign an annual verification letter confirming total hours. This is gold during audits.

4. Distinguish Individual vs Group

Some associations count group supervision differently. Always specify which type.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't make these errors:

  • ❌ Logging peer consultation as formal supervision
  • ❌ Counting supervision you provide to others (that's a different category)
  • ❌ Backdating entries months later
  • ❌ Forgetting to track during holiday periods
